MusiQuest
The music timeline guessing game

Song’s on.
Which year?

One song from the host’s speaker, one timeline on every phone. You place it by its release year, before or after the tracks already there. Whoever reaches enough points first wins.

What you need

One speaker. One phone per person.

2devices
at least
1 × host

Laptop, tablet or phone with a speaker. Plays the music and shows the QR code and leaderboard.

at least 1 × player

A smartphone of their own for every person playing.

MusiQuest can’t be played on a single device: the host plays the music, and the placing happens on the phones. No music plays on the phones, only the timeline.

Device with sound

Laptop, tablet or phone as the host. The songs play through it, and it also shows the QR code.

One smartphone per person

No app, no account, no sign-up. An up-to-date browser is all it takes.

Spotify is optional

The songs come from an embedded Spotify player. By default, 30-second previews play, and that’s enough for a whole game. Full songs play when the host plays on a laptop and is signed in to Spotify Premium in the browser there. With a tablet or phone as the host, it stays with previews.

Music on the sound system

Via AirPlay (iPhone, iPad), Google Cast (Android) or Bluetooth to a speaker or receiver. You set this up on the device, not in MusiQuest.

A game night, step by step

From the sofa to the winner’s podium

This is how a game goes, from setup to crowning the winner.

  1. Host

Pick a playlist, set the rules

Tap “Create a game” and “Allow Spotify”. Choose a playlist, adjust the winning score and points or just take the defaults. You don’t need an account.

  2. Everyone

Scan the QR code or enter the room code

After “Open room”, the host shows a QR code and the room code. Players scan the QR code with their phone camera or enter the room code here on the start page. Then they type in their name, and they’re on the leaderboard.

  3. Players

    Listen, slide the marker

Title and artist stay secret, only the music plays. To start, there’s already one song on your timeline. Slide the marker before it, after it or in between. With “+” and “−” you pin down the exact year.

  4. Optional

    Bonus questions for the bold

Up to two questions, depending on the settings about artist, song title, album or genre. A right answer earns 1 point, a wrong one costs 1 point. Leaving it blank costs nothing.

  5. Reveal

    Year, title, points

The host reveals the answer. Everyone sees right away what earned points, and a correctly placed song stays on their timeline. It gets fuller and harder with every round.

  6. Finale

First to reach the target wins

With the defaults that’s 10 points. After that, “New game” takes you straight into the next one.

For players

How to get into the room

As soon as the room is open, the host’s screen shows a QR code and the room code. There are two ways in.

Way 1 · Camera

Scan the QR code

Open your smartphone’s camera, point it at the QR code and tap the link that appears.

Way 2 · Room code

Enter the room code

Type in the room code the host is showing, for example k7m3pqx.

Then enter your name and you’re in. No app, no account.

Points

Easy to learn, hard to master

Song placed correctly+1
Exact release year (instead of placed correctly)+3
Bonus question 1 right / wrong (default: artist)+1 / −1
Bonus question 2 right / wrong (default: song title)+1 / −1
Points to win10

These are the defaults. The host can change any number before the game starts. A wrong placement costs nothing; you only lose points for wrongly answered bonus questions.

Game variants

More pressure, if you want it

Stress mode · 10 s

The clock is ticking

As soon as the first answer is in, a countdown starts for everyone else, 10 seconds by default. Whoever answers first and gets it right earns bonus points.

Teaser mode · 30 s

Just a taste

Each song only plays for a fixed time, 30 seconds by default. The rounds get faster and harder.

Bonus questions · your choice

For music nerds

Two extra questions per song, about artist, song title, album or genre. The host decides the points for right and wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Any questions?

Does it work with just one device?

No. You need at least 2 devices: one as the host, which the music plays through, and at least one smartphone as a player. Each additional person brings one more smartphone.

Do I need to know the exact release year?

No. It’s enough to know whether the song is older or newer than the ones already on your timeline. The exact year only earns extra points.

How can I tell the decade?

By the sound, not just the song: reverb, drums and production often give away the decade more clearly than the melody. Careful with cover versions and re-releases: what counts is the year of the recording that is playing.

Do we need an account or an app?

No. Neither the host nor the players need an account. Everyone plays in the browser. Spotify is optional too: without signing in you get 30-second previews; full songs play when the host is signed in to Spotify Premium on a laptop.

Why does the song stop after 30 seconds?

Spotify only delivers a preview when the host plays on a tablet or phone, or isn’t signed in to Spotify Premium on the laptop. You can still play that way. For full songs, the host signs in to Spotify Premium on the laptop and reloads the page.

Which languages is MusiQuest available in?

German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese.

Are the bonus questions worth it?

Only if you’re sure. A wrong guess costs as much as a right one earns. Leaving it blank is always allowed.
